What Spare Parts Should You Keep for Long-Distance Drives?

Always carry the essential spare parts for your car. Especially on long drives. You want to make sure you don’t have any breakdowns, delays, or surprise expenses.

So, which spare parts should you keep handy for those cross-country trips? Let’s dive in and get you road-ready.

1. Spare Tire and Tire Repair Kit

Nothing will shut down a drive quicker than a flat tire. Carry a spare tire and a repair kit. Make sure you have a jack, lug wrench, and a tire inflator. A simple puncture or slow leak doesn’t have to ruin your trip.

2. Engine Oil

The lifeblood of your engine is oil. If you run out of oil, you’re going to damage your engine. That can be very expensive to repair. Keep an extra quart of the right oil in your trunk.

3. Coolant

Engines get hot very fast. Especially on hot days or when you’re driving uphill. Keep a bottle of coolant in your car. Don’t let your engine overheat.

4. Brake Fluid

You need your brakes to work correctly to ensure your safety. Brake fluid is what makes your brakes work. If you notice the brake pedal feeling “spongy” or your brakes don’t work as well as they should, check your brake fluid level and refill if necessary.

A dirty air filter will decrease your engine’s performance and fuel efficiency. Keep a spare air filter in the trunk. If your filter gets clogged, swap it out so your engine can breathe.

9. Battery Jump Starter

Car batteries can die without warning. A jump starter can save your bacon, especially if you’re in the middle of nowhere. Get one and keep it with you in your vehicle.

10. Assorted Tools and Tape

Don’t forget about the basics. Keep a set of tools and some duct tape in your car. You never know when you might need to tighten something up or patch a hose.
